Simply say what you ate, and the circumstances when you ate it such as:  was in a restaurant, during a trip to another country,  or other situations. Next. describe what the food is and how it tasted. Moreover, you could also give a background of your experience such as preconceived notions of the food, etc. Below is an example.

On my first trip to Japan,  the very first thing I tried was sashimi simply because it was the only Japanese food that seemed familiar to me.  I didn't know that there were  Japanese restaurants that exclusively sold sashimi only. Anyway, I went to this hole in the wall in an alley and had my first authentic Japanese sashimi.  I thought that it was going to smell fishy, but it didn't. Also,  it didn't have a fishy taste at all. That was a relief. In fact, had a subtle but smooth flavor.  Dipping it a little in soy sauce and that greenish thing  ( I forgot the name) enhances the flavor.
