What's the difference: nerd, geek, and dork? My roommate calls me these names. What's the difference? Please tell me. Also, what is "otaku" in English?

Official definitions for nerd, geek, and dork each use the words "inept" "foolish" and "unattractive". According to Whatis.com, nerds are people of above-average intelligence who place little importance on their appearance. Nerds are often aware of their status, but they don't mind. In fact, many take pride in the put"down, as it means they're smart and not wrapped up in superficial worries. Geek is a more specific term. Back in the day, geeks worked at carnivals, and (according to the dictionary) "bit the heads off live chickens." Thankfully, the term now has a different connotation. Like nerds, geeks are smart, but they tend to focus more on technology. As Urban Dictionary explains, these are the people you make fun of in high school and later work for as an adult. Being called a "dork" is the biggest insult of the three and means "stupid". "Otaku" is a Japanese slang word which means someone who has a hobby that they spend more time, money, and effort on than normal people do. It sounds as if your room mate is jealous of you.You can reply by saying "whatever" in a bored tone or voice or just ignore him.

Your roommate is thinking vey high of you! He must be jealous;) From his point of view you are stupid and incompetent ( dork) , you are a boring and feeble person (nerd) and on top of that you are an unattractive social misfit ( a geek). He loves you :) Notice that "Geek"and " Nerd " are quite similar in meaning! 'Otaku' is an enthusiast or obsessed anime. It refers in general to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, or video games . A specific meaning refers to a young Japanese obsessed with computers: young Japanese who spend all their available time using computers or learning about computer technology and so do not develop social skills .Another term for it in English : Computer nerd.

There is not really any difference between nerd, dork, and geek. All nerds are also geeks and dorks. The word just refers to a person (almost always a guy) who is awkward in social situations, doesn't dress fashionably, can't get a girlfriend, and is fascinated by science, computers, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and stuff like that. Otaku is basically a Japanese nerd but the otaku's hobby is specifcally anime, manga, and other Japanese stuff. There isn't an English word for it. People just say otaku. "Nerd" sounds like an insult but your roomate probably means it in a friendly or joking way. These days a lot of people think it is cool to be a nerd. You will even see American girls wearing T-shirts that say "I love nerds."

I had a teacher who referred to computer techs as "nerds, dweebs, and geeks". Dweeb is another word similar to nerd, geek, and dork.
