How to choose presents for a Japanese host family?
I have got a chance to visit Japan and to live in a host family there. I would be happy to bring some presents with me, but I am kind of buffled around what would be a good idea for that. I am now thinking about collection of photocards with the views of my city (those are really worth it) with comments in Japanse or a DVD with overview of my city's attractions (with a Japanese recording as well). Another thought is to bring a collection of porcelain cups (one for each family member) with different city views drawn on them. I am a bit anxious about how not to make them feel oblidged or something and at the same time to bring a piece that would be both nice and somehow useful. If anyone can give me a hint or an opinion on my own ideas - I would be extremely grateful. I am living in Russia, by the way ^_^ My host family is a pair and their son.
Thank you!
Since you are from Russia, something authentic like a bottle of vodka or Матрёшка etc would be great gift. if your host dad likes to drink..
If I were to be your host family, I will request something you can get from your local super market like seasoning, dried foods or tibits that can store long. And then we cook Russian foods together ;)

I agree with the two people who already answered.
If I were your host mother, I'd like to know how you are doing in your life in your hometown, too. I'd love to know about your city, family, house, food you usually eat or you like, etc...

I just visited Costa Rica and thought about that for a while. Finally, I took them a Texas flag that had flown over our capital building. The state also provides a certificate that states when the flag was flown. They put the flag in their hallway and the certificate in their living room.
