What's the meaning of "maligned" in this passage? Please.
Please help me with the following passage:
"The dandelion is one of the most maligned of weeds. It is really a living supermarket. The leaves of the young plant are delicious in salads. The leaves can also be cooked. With beans they make a meal."
What's the meaning of "maligned" in this passage?
Thank you.

Jennifer, when something or someone is maligned, it means that it or they are spoken about unfavorably. Such is the fate of the dandelion. You rarely ever hear about its good qualities and it is usually referred to as a weed. People complain about dandelions because they grow in places where they are unwelcome.
