What's the difference between 'be viewed as' and 'be regarded as'? Can you teach me what's the difference between 'be viewed as ' and 'be regarded as '.

Greetings, They mean almost the same thing and if there are differences they are very subtle. Regard for instance can carry the meaning of respect and so can be a positive thing. Be careful though it is not always positive as in example 1). Some examples: 1) The woman regarded him with suspicion. 2) He was viewed as an honest person. 3) I regard him as my closest friend. 4) He was viewed as an important leader. 5) He is regarded as an authority on the subject. 6) She was highly regarded among her friends. (In this example 'regarded' carries the meaning of respect especially when the collocation 'highly regarded' is used) In these sentences they serve the same function and mean 'to look upon', 'to consider' or 'to view'.
