What's the difference between "command" & "demand" when it comes to respect? Hi friends, What's the difference between "command" and "demand" when it comes to respect? E.g. 1) Being an award winning actor, he commands respect from others. 2) Being an award winning actor, he demands respect from others. Thanks in advance! Niwantha

Actually, the first one is correct in this context. 'Command' can also mean 'to deserve and get something', such as respect or attention. In the first example he deserves respect because he is so accomplished. In the second 'demand' could be seen as quite negative - he is asking for respect, rather than being given it because of his accomplishments. Hope that's clear.

First one is correct. But it depends upon your viewpoint. Command in this context does not mean to give a command like a sergeant to a solider, it means his acting ability is such, that he "commands" ->is due respect for his abilities. In daily English the two are often confused. If the Actor "who is so good" demanded respect that may imply a certain level of arrogance etc. Normally the website Quora can be confusing, but I think the third answer given explains it well enough. see below ---- "A person that commands respect is a person that is so worthy of respect that everyone just automatically respects them. Think about the people you know that fit this description. There aren't many, are there? People that command respect are icons. They are lighthouses in a stormy sea. People that demand respect are chock-a-block. They are everywhere. Your boss demands that you respect him. The principal of your school demands respect. Any puffed up tyrant with an ego bigger than Kansas demands respect." --- https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-command-respect-and-demand-respect "commanding respect" is not one single word to look up in a dictionary it is a phrase, it is the phrase that needs to be found in a dictionary.

When you command, there is a mutual acceptance for respect and fulfilling requests. When you demand, there does not have to be any mutual understanding, but the fulfillment of requests is expected, without exception, without options.

Hi Niwantha, The second one is correct! Demand means expect, so the actor expects respect. Command means to give orders so it is used related to a situation when a person with authority orders someone to do something. Example: The officer commanded the soldiers to shoot.
