Does The Word Vend Mean The Same As Sell? Vend and sell are the same according to dictionaries, but we use to sell for ordinary use in shops at market stalls or anywhere else. We use the term vendor in legal contractors and agreements. vend if it is ever used would be only for very small items. That's why the machines you buy things from are called vending machines and not selling machines, and some street sellers who sell small items from a tray around their neck etc may be called vendors or street vendors.

The meaning is basically the same, but you should use "sell". The word "vend" sounds strange and we only use it in a few specific circumstances.

The other answers are good but there can be a technical difference when you are talking about laws and governance. For example, a vendor habitually selling something as a way to make a living might be subject to laws or regulations that wouldn’t apply to everyone selling that thing. vending machine (yes) selling machine (no)

It depends in what context. I'm a salesman, and I sell. If I was "vending" a product, it'll sound a little funny. You don't really say "I will vend you this pen for $5." Now, maybe in the context of using a vending machine "vending" or "vend" the item. This is probably the only time you'll use the word. In my opinion, I would say "sell" is NOT the same as "vend". Ask the guy who sells for a living. :-)

Yes, 'vend' and 'sell' mean the same thing. I think 'vend' is used in formal setting.
