Hi. I'm Shuni. Thank you for checking on my profile. I was born in Indonesia into an English speaking family. That makes me native in English and Indonesian. I do have a second language, though. It’s Japanese. I started to learn Japanese after graduating from high school. What I’m trying to say is that I cannot relate well with those learning English as a second language, but I do know very well what it is like to learn a second language. I’ve experiences in teaching English, Indonesian, and Japanese. Because Japanese isn’t my native language, I often find it easier to explain Japanese grammar instead of English or Indonesian grammar. There are times when a foreigner asks me about an English or Indonesian expression or spelling which I had taken for granted. For example: Does “news” mean “many new things” because it ends with an “s”? Why do you say “the news doesn’t sound good” instead of “the news don’t sound good”? Then, I’d have to look up some sources to be able to answer that the word “news” is plural in form but singular in construction. With Japanese, it’s the other way around. I agree that to learn a language, you should learn it in the respective language. For example, you’re learning Japanese. You should learn it in Japanese. Every language has its own way of expressing things. To express in a certain language, you have to think in that language. But if you think in English to express something in Japanese, you might end up sounding English in your Japanese. I’m not talking about accent. It’s about way of expression.
Nevertheless, some would consider that too much of a challenge. I won’t object. I’m a trilingual. I can teach you Japanese in English, or Indonesian. I also can teach you English in Japanese, or Indonesian.

Since Shuni can speak Japanese, I was able to understand the subtle differences in nuance. I also learned about the differences in grammar between Japanese and English. It was a very meaningful time. I plan to continue taking lessons and to practice a lot on my own.
