Voiced consonants at the end of words are pronounced voiceless.

Voiced-voiceless assimilation 

When voiced and voiceless consonants are adjacent to each other, the nature of the second consonant dictates the nature of the first. To put it more succinctly, when two consonants go walking, the second one does the talking:

El león y el ratón

Había una vez un león que estaba durmiendo. Un ratón comenzó a correr sobre su cuerpo y lo despertó. El león, enfadado, atrapó al ratón con su gran garra. El ratón le suplicó al león que lo dejara ir, prometiéndole que algún día le devolvería el favor. El león, riéndose, lo dejó ir. Más tarde, el león fue atrapado en una red por unos cazadores. El ratón escuchó sus rugidos de ayuda y corrió para liberarlo, royendo la cuerda de la red. El león comprendió entonces que incluso los más pequeños pueden ayudar a los más grandes.
