But the queen didn't like Snow White.

她从来不和白雪公主在一起。

She never spent time with the girl.

她经常和魔镜说话。
Tā jīngcháng hé mójìng shuō huà。
She talked to her mirror often.

“魔镜！我是最美的女人，对吗？”

"Mirror! I'm the most beautiful woman, right?"

"My Lady," the mirror said.

“Nín quèshí hěn měi。Dànshì xiàzài yǒu yī gè rén bǐ nín gèng měi。”
"You are indeed quite fair. But now there's someone more beautiful."

「お母さんは、人間は恐ろしいものだって
おっしゃったが　ちっとも恐ろしくないや。
だって僕の手を見てもどうもしなかったもの」

と思いました。
けれど子狐は いったい人間なんてどんなものか見たい
と思いました。
ある窓の下を通りかかると、人間の声がしていました。
何というやさしい、何という美しい、何と言う
おっとりした声なんでしょう。

「ねむれ　ねむれ
　母の胸に、
　ねむれ　ねむれ
　母の手に――」

子狐はその歌声は、きっと人間のお母さんの声に
ちがいないと思いました。
だって、子狐が眠る時にも、やっぱり母さん狐は、
あんなやさしい声で ゆすぶってくれるからです。
