The word is not used appropriately in [1] and [2] . [1] could be 'The player's mom helped him excel' or . .'achieve his excellent performance.' [2] could be 'The player has excelled from December' if his performance is still good, or 'He excelled in December' if he then played badly again. [3] is correct but better written as 'The player started to excel in his field.' 'Anyone can't hold a candle to him.' should be 'no-one can hold a candle to him.'
