How many tutoring sessions per week is ideal for a beginner?

Hi everyone,

What are your opinions on how many tutoring sessions per week are ideal for a beginner? Once? Twice? More? I'm learning French by myself at home and have used a community tutor one time to practice what I was learning. I found it very helpful but am curious how many sessions other people like to do per week?

There are two factors to consider: the amount of time that you have, and the amount of money that you have.

As a beginner, you should probably study 1.5-3 hours on your own for every hour you spend with a tutor. (At least that's what's considered "normal" for a college-level course.) So, if you have (say) ten hours a week to spend on your target language, then I'd think that three hours with a tutur, plus about two hours of independent study after each lesson would be ideal.

And then of course you have to take money into account. If you want to spend ten hours a week on the language but can only pay for one hour of tutoring per week, then I guess you should take that one hour of tutoring and spend nine hours studying independently.

I think it depends on a number of factors, but in general, the more exposure to the language you can have the better. I'm taking 2 sessions a week with a tutor and find that it's works out well. It gives me a few days in between to do some independent study and try to absorb anything new from the last session. However, if money and time were no object, I would probably have a session every day. I'm currently focused on speaking and listening so our sessions are almost entirely just chatting. If I could do this every day I think it would be great. However, if I was trying to learn new grammar, lots of new vocabulary, etc every day that would be too much for me.

If you have the money and the time, try taking a few extra sessions a week and see if that is too much for you or if it helps. I think that is the only way you will really find out.

Good luck!

even 20 hours are not enough... but 10-14 h are quite good...  three times 20 minutes a day+ 1 h full or 4-5 times 10-15 minutes+30 min ....

Thanks everyone! Your feedback is helpful. It is the first time that I have attempted to learn a language from home (ie not in a classroom) so just trying to figure out the best way to do it :)
