what's the difference between precede vs predate?
what's the difference between precede vs predate or when it's preferable to use precede than predate ?

It’s in the word. “PreDATE” means something comes before something else in DATE. “Precede” is more general and means something comes before something else (in date, or position, etc).

My impression is that predate only refers to large differences in time. “Julius Caesar’s legal reforms predate the beginning of the Republic” (100s of years)
precede is closer to “before”
Both are fairly formal though
