Volodia
Hungarian keyboard layout

Hi. How do you go about typing in Hungarian alphabet with a standard QWERTY layout? I know that the layout for Hungarian differs, so if I install it I'd have to change the labels. The problem is that I already have two sets of labels for English and for Cyrillic, there is no place left for the third one. Is there any solution to add Hungarian accents to the standard Latin letters?

I know nothing about Hungarian, so forgive me if I'm out of line by commenting here, but I do know about keyboards.  If you're using a Mac, press and hold the letter and you will be given options for accent marks.  If you're using a PC and your keyboard has a number pad, you can Google "alt codes" and you can find out which numbers will make which accent.  This is how I type Spanish accents on my PC.  For example, Alt+130 is é.  If you're using a PC and your keyboard doesn't have a number pad, get a keyboard with a number pad.  Alt codes only work with the number pad for some reason.

On my keyboard it is possible to pretype the accents.

E.g AltGr+9 is the comma for ú ó é á í

AltGr+= is the umlaut for ö ü

AltGr+0 is the long umlaut for ő ű

So for example if I type AltGr+=, then nothing happens. Then I press u, and voila an ü appears on my screen. I hope, it was not too confusing :)

BTW, I have a Slovak keyboard at work, and a Hungarian one at home. The examples above are form the Slovak one but the same possibility exist on the Hungarian keyboard as well.

Ok, I've added a Hungarian international layout which does not change the usual QWERTY order but allows me to type áÁéÉ etc with key combinations of Alt + A, Alt + E etc. I will try it out and see whether it will be more convenient that the Hungarian layout proper.

Hi Volodia! I don't know why you can't add another setting to your computer, but if this is the case, your best chance is to remember the place of the Hungarian keys... I also do the same when I'm at a computer with only an English keyboard.

Good luck, Volodia! Or just get a Hungarian keyboard. :)
