注音 , an abbreviation for Zhùyīn Fúhào (注音符號)and also called "Bopomofo" are annotated sounds, a phonetic transliteration for Chinese used especially in Taiwan for learning Chinese specially Standard Mandarin. The sole purpose for zhuyin in elementary education is to teach Standard Mandarin pronunciation to children. The system uses 37 special symbols to represent the Mandarin sounds: 21 consonants and 16 vowels. There is a one symbol-one sound correspondence. What is the use of Zhuyin? becuz of chinese letter arent like any languages in the world. the simpols(letters) itself doesnt lead to any clue for us to read it. and thatz how it so called pictures-letters(ofcuz it not every chinese characters are derived from drawing) just those basic words like (animals, river,finsh, sun, moon........etc those are basic needed in daily life) and later on we dont have enough words to use, so, have to be invented more words, and mostly of those new words are not related to the picture at all.) the important of ZHUYIN is to help we to read the complicated chinese characters. becuz in another word, zhuyin(pinyin) is just like alphabet-system. once we learned the alphabet so we can read any of the words. so, ofcuz, why they have to keep the two systems (alphabet and characters) for this, the alphabet(zhuyin) in chinese doesn't familiar to the chinese, becuze they been taught to read characters whole life while tthey just learnt ZHUYIN until aged 8 ___then after just memorizing the characters , and the zhuyin will play the roles for everytime there are encounter new Vocaburaries. second reasons : why don't use zhuyin instead of characters. becuz' if we write a long texts using whole zhuyin, it may lead to MIS-understanding in long phrases. in chinese they are many same words that pronouns that same and it is unclear for the reader at all with the zhuyin alone. for the second reasons , it is the same in THAI, we have many the same pronunciations but we dont wirte the same things. There is a one-to-one correspondence between zhuyin and pinyin. I think one advantage of zhuyin, it is does not confuse people who are coming from a language using Roman characters. Historically, it was created with the new China around 1911 and phased out with the change of government after 1949. In Taiwan, there is/were keyboards with zhuyin input.

Zhuyin is probably like the phonetic symbol in English. It is used to pronounce better. If you want to learn it well, you need to learn the 汉语拼音first, which is made up of 26letters looked similary with the 26 letters in English,while the pronouncation is totally different.Also zhuyin includes the using of the four kinds of the tones.
