Would you mind if I sit down? and Would you mind if I sat down? What's the difference between them?

"Sit" is used in the present tense. "Sat" is used in the past tense. "Sat" would be used because the question could be rephrased as, "If I sat down, would you mind?" If you change the question to "Do you mind if I sit down?", "sit" is used because the tense of the sentence has been changed from past to present tense.
