Is 'however' ever used in an informal conversation? Oxford Dictionary says 'however' is more formal than 'though' and 'although'. Does this suggest that 'however' is only used in writing or a formal speech?

I disagree with the dictionary...is it a British dictionary? I, and people I know (in the USA) would commonly use however in casual conversation. It would be interchangeable with although, linking two phrases together. It is not that formal.

Thank you all, David Buckingham, Jesse, Gena, Jura, James. Actually the whole group of your answers make the best answer. However, as the system only permits me to choose one answer from yours as the best answer, I have to choose the one given first.

In genuinely informal conversation we are much more likely to use "but". I would agree that "however" is used more often in written English.

Australians don't use it in everyday spoken English very much, only in very formal conversations.
