'Notify' is more official.
I would be notified by the local government that I must pay a fine.
I would be notified by my doctor that I should schedule an appointment.
My bank would notify me of a problem with my account.
If anybody notifies you, they inform you. If somebody informs you, the word 'notify' would not necessarily be used also.
