Hit the hay
Is it a common English expression?
I heard some people saying "hit the bed", but I don't think it is correct. Or does it mean the same thing?
"Hit the hay" - yes, we all know it. Maybe a more modern version would be "crash out".
"Hit the bed" sounds awkward, and I'd understand it literally. A misinterpretation of the idiom?

It's fairly common, but a little old-fashioned. You also might hear "hit the sack," which has the same meaning. "Hit the bed" isn't commonly used, in my experience.
