No, it's not an idiom exactly, it's more an exaggerated way of speaking. It means he was willing to do almost anything to defend it.

Tal vez él se está refiriendo a los combates de trincheras en Europa durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Tal vez él quiere decir que él nunca habría abandonado la lucha en apoyo de la invención del niño.
