There's an evolution in the direction of using the hyphen less and less. I can't find "south-east" at ahdictionary.com and would recommend "southeast." There are many, many examples of words in transition from hyphenated to unhyphenated. You will often see compound words written with a hyphen in books written fifty years ago that are no longer written with a hyphen today.
