Why is Australia called the land down under?
The other day I was watching a video where two people was chatting about a trip to Australia and then they referred to it as the land down under.
If you look at the globe, it's position is in the Southern hemisphere. So because it's on the underside of the globe, it gets this nickname.

"Down under" is a colloquial expression meaning "in the southern hemisphere". I assume because on a map, Australia and New Zealand are under, or below, the rest of the British Empire.
