Difference between 川 and 河? I learned these two kanji, both of which have the meaning "river" and the reading "かわ". Is there any difference in nuance between them, or rules about when to use one or the other?

河 is used for a large river, but normally it refers to a river in China like 黄河 in my opinion. 川 is a versatile word and used for any kinds from a stream to Nile river. Hope this helps:)

" 河 " is a large river. Also a large river , the name will be used " 川 " .(信濃川、利根川、石狩川)
