"Lance away" Hi, what's the meaning of "lance away"? The context goes like this: "Realizing he was staring, Alfred’s blue eyes lanced away, realizing the older woman had disappeared back into the apartment, apparently getting something since Ivan was still waiting by the open door, and came back out with a handful of full Tupperware." • It probably means something like "He averted his eyes." but when the meaning of "lance" taken into consideration it makes no sense. I also couldn't find any other usage of "lance away" Is it a typo?

In general lance is a sharp rod or a weapon to cut something. But it also has one more interpretation that is to "Move suddenly and quickly."

I, too, think it is a typo for "glanced away."

Thank you, Shamika! I thought so, because I've never seen such an expression before and considering the meaning of lance it makes no sense.

I think it might be a typo. Maybe it is suppose to be "glanced away" meaning he looked away.
