What is the difference between "However" and "Furthermore" ? I need to choose the correct item. Today we take many inventions for granted but one of the most useful ones is the ‘not so (1)’ significant (critical, meaningful, serious) supermarket trolley. Before the 1930s women shoppers went into grocery stores with their own baskets. (2) However ? Furthermore ( In particular, Apart from that ), they would only buy a few things because their baskets wouldn’t (3) hold ( keep, put , take ) much.

However = but. (I wanted to play Tennis; however Irinia didn't want to) Furthermore = in addition to. (I wanted to play Tennis; furthermore Irinia wanted too)

Hi Irina, The two words have different functions. "However" is a conjunction used for contrast Example: A snowstorm was approaching the city. However, transportation services were still running at full capacity. while "Furthermore" is used to elaborate more on an earlier point. In your passage, an earlier sentence explained the inconvenience female shoppers faced as they had to bring along their own shopping basket. In the subsequent sentence, you elaborated on this inconvenience by describing how the size of their baskets restricted the quantity of their purchases. Based on this, "furthermore" is the word that should be used in the passage. Hope this helps. Cheers, Lance
