peg you out on the washing line? ‘Come here, I’ll hutch up a bit.’ Gladys pats the cushion of her chair. James climbs on with her, throwing the thin blanket over both of them. ‘Now, what’s to do ?’ James yawns again. ‘I just can’t sleep.’ ‘You can’t fool me. I know there’s something up. Usually I could peg you out on the washing line and you’d go to sleep. What’s to do ? Is it those bad lads again ?’ James nods and looks miserably at the telly. ‘What’s this film ?’ I would like to know what does " peg you out on the washing line" here mean. Thanks.

A washing line or clothesline is a long a rope or wire on which washed clothes are hung to dry. Often people attach the clothes to the washing line with pegs (also called clothes peg or clothes pin). So the Gladys is saying she could hang James on a washing line and he would still fall asleep.

In this context, the woman is saying that normally she could take him outside and hang him from the clothes line like drying laundry.
