"ditch" means to leave somebody or something and move on - either physically or metaphorically. It is somewhat close to "get rid of". The picture is throwing something into the ditch. It implies you are leaving something behind that you don't want. "Why are you so sad?" "My girlfriend ditched me. And all over a little argument!" or "Did your mom catch you with the cigarettes?" "No, I ditched them before she saw me."
