Carolina Hernandez

I feel so fortunate to have found Carolina. She is the best! Works with me at my level towards my goals. She uses really good materials that are very helpful. I am always happy to have had a lesson with Carolina. Siempre cinco Estrellas!

I often say similar things about my lessons with Carolina, because they're consistently true. She works me hard. I feel like my brain is getting a workout. We pick difficult material and it's slow going, but I'm learning steadily. I'm learning about the legal system in Colombia and the standards of evidence, and I'm not involved in police or legal work--these are simply topics that have caught my interest in looking at other aspects of Colombian social life. Wherever you are in your studies of Spanish, Carolina can take you higher, at whatever pace you're ready for.

Outstanding. I chose Carolina because of how clearly she spoke in her video, making it easy for me to understand her. I also was impressed that she is a journalist. I could tell that she was a nice person. She was very helpful and knowledgeable in our first lesson. I'm going begin regular lessons with her immediately.

We are almost halfway through our series of 90 short stories and poems. (We specialize in long-term projects.) I translated a Baroque-era poem, and will translate another poem this week. Carolina helps me go deeply into allegory and metaphor in these readings. I could read and translate them on my own, largely thanks to her efforts with me, but it's just way more interesting and productive to discuss them with her. She is literally leading me from difficulty or impossibility into possibility, something she is very skilled at.

This week I celebrate 4 years of learning Spanish with Carolina. We're almost halfway through a series of 90 short readings: a page or two, short stories, poems, and verses, followed by questions. I'm struggling with reading comprehension, the reason for this series. Yes, I'm self-conscious about it, and I know that many students mastered this years sooner than I have been able to do. But I'm determined to get it eventually, Carolina always has suitable resources, and she has stuck it out with me through a lot of difficulties. Onward!

It is almost 4 years that I have been working with Carolina. I think my process is slower than some students, and she has stayed with me despite my difficulties. I have built a library of skills with her in good pronunciation, transcription, translation, listening, and writing. I just finished a translation of a poem from the Spanish Baroque, and have started writing a book in Spanish, with her review. This, my second language, permeates nearly every area of my life now, and a lot of that is because of Carolina. I have great appreciation and respect for what she has done for me. Señorita, it is not possible to express all my appreciation, but these words are a start.
