1. The Golden Rule 🌟
The biggest difference between Past Simple and Present Perfect comes down to one thing: TIME.
Past Simple = Finished Time. The action happened in the past, and that time period is completely over.
Present Perfect = Unfinished Time. The action happened in the past, but the time period or the connection to the present is still alive.
2. Look for the “Time Markers” 🔎
Your best clues are the time words used in a sentence.
Use Past Simple with FINISHED time words:
Yesterday, last week, in 2024, 2 hours ago, when I was a child.
❌ Incorrect: I have seen him yesterday.
✅ Correct: I saw him yesterday.
Use Present Perfect with UNFINISHED time words:
Today, this week, this month, recently, ever, never, so far.
❌ Incorrect: I went to the gym three times this week. (If the week isn’t finished yet!)
✅ Correct: I have been to the gym three times this week.
3. Experience vs. Specific Details ✈️
Use Present Perfect to talk about a general life experience (when exactly it happened doesn’t matter).
“I have visited Paris.” (In my life, I have this experience).
Use Past Simple the moment you give specific details about when or where.
“I visited Paris in 2022.”
