The sixth planet was ten times larger than the last one.
上面住着一位老先生，他在写作大部头的书。
It was inhabited by an old gentleman who wrote voluminous books.
“瞧！来了一位探险家。”老先生看到小王子时，叫了起来。
"Oh, look! Here is an explorer!" he exclaimed to himself when he saw the little prince coming.
小王子在桌旁坐下，有点气喘吁吁。
The little prince sat down on the table and panted a little.
他跑了多少路啊！
He had already traveled so much and so far!
“你从哪里来的呀？”老先生问小王子。
"Where do you come from?" the old gentleman said to him.
“这一大本是什么书？你在这里干什么？”小王子问道。
"What is that big book?" said the little prince. "What are you doing?"
“我是地理学家。”老先生答道。
"I am a geographer," the old gentleman said to him.
“什么是地理学家？”小王子问。
"What is a geographer?" asked the little prince.
地理学家，就是一种学者，他知道哪里有海洋，哪里有江河、城市、山脉、沙漠。
A geographer is a scholar who knows the location of all the seas, rivers,towns, mountains, and deserts.
“这倒挺有意思。”小王子说。“这才是一种真正的行当。”
"That is very interesting," said the little prince. "Here at last is a man who has a real profession!"
他朝四周围看了看这位地理学家的星球。
And he cast a look around him at the planet of the geographer.
他还从来没有见过一颗如此壮观的行星。
It was the most magnificent and stately planet that he had ever seen.
“您的星球真美呀。上面有海洋吗？”他说。
"Your planet is very beautiful," he said. "Has it any oceans?"
“这我没法知道。”地理学家说。

"I couldn't tell you," said the geographer.
“啊！”小王子大失所望。“那么，山脉呢？”
"Ah!" The little prince was disappointed. "Has it any mountains?"
“这，我没法知道。”地理学家说。
"I couldn't tell you," said the geographer.
“那么，有城市、河流、沙漠吗？”
"And towns, and rivers, and deserts?"
这，我也没法知道。
I couldn't tell you that, either.
可您还是地理学家呢！
But you are a geographer!
“一点不错，”地理学家说，
"Exactly," the geographer said.
但是我不是探察家。我手下一个探察家都没有。
But I am not an explorer. I haven't a single explorer on my planet.
地理学家是不去计算城市、河流、山脉、海洋、沙漠的。
It is not the geographer who goes out to count the towns, the rivers, the mountains, the seas, the oceans, and the deserts.
地理学家很重要，不能到处跑。
The geographer is much too important to go loafing about.
他不能离开他的办公室。
He does not leave his desk
但他可以在办公室里接见探察家

"THAT'S IT," MY MOTHER SAID AFTER HAVING SADIE PUT TO SLEEP. "MY CAT DAYS ARE OVER."

In the early sixties, during what my mother referred to as the "tail end of the Lassie years," my parents were given two collies they named Rastus and Duchess. We were living in upstate New York, out in the country, and the dogs were free to race through the forest. They napped in meadows and stood knee-deep in frigid streams, costars in their own private dog-food commercial. According to our father, anyone could tell that the two of them were in love.

Late one evening, while lying on a blanket in the garage, Duchess gave birth to a litter of slick, potato-sized puppies. When it looked as though one of them had died, our mother placed the creature in a casserole dish and popped it into the oven, like the witch in "Hänsel and Gretel."

"Oh, keep your shirts on," she said. "It's only set on 200. I'm not baking anyone; this is just to keep him warm."

The heat revived the sick puppy and left us believing our mother was capable of resurrecting the dead.

Faced with the responsibilities of fatherhood, Rastus took off. The puppies were given away, and we moved south, where the heat and humidity worked against a collie's best interests. Duchess's once beautiful coat now hung in ragged patches. Age set in and she limped about the house, clearing rooms with her suffocating farts. When finally, full of worms, she collapsed in the ravine beside our house, we reevaluated our mother's healing powers. The entire animal kingdom was beyond her scope; apparently, she could resurrect only the cute dead.

The oven trick was performed on half a dozen peakish hamsters but failed to work on my first guinea pig, who died after eating a couple of cigarettes and an entire pack of matches.

汗ばんだ両手で明太子と梅のおにぎりを一つずつ持ちレジへと向かった。


レジの前に来たが、レジには誰もいない。若くて長い黒髪を後ろで束ねてる男の店員Aは忙しそうに商品を補充している。

すいませんと声を出そうと思ったその時にレジの台の上にあるベルに気がついた。
そこには小さい字でご用の方はこのベルを鳴らしてくださいと日本語と英語の両方で書かれてある。

最初に私は人差し指を使って軽く押してみたが音が出ない。今度は親指を使って強く押すとかわいくて高い音が店内に響いた。

少々お待ちくださいという店員Aの声が聞こえ、彼は小走りにレジに向かってきた。


店員A  「お待たせいたしました。梅おにぎりが一つ、明太子おにぎりが一つ、以上で260円になります。袋はいかがなさいますか？」

私「いらないです。支払いはパスモカードでお願いします。」

店員A「はい、こちらにお願いします。」

彼はカードを近づける場所を右手でていねいに指した。
私はパスモカードをレジ台にかざして支払いをした。

店員A「ありがとうございました。」

私は店員から二つのおにぎりとレシートを受け取ると自分のカバンに入れた。店内を見回すと客は私だけのようだ。それから店を出ると男が一人店の前の横に座っていた。

Last time ↓ With sweaty hands, I held one cod roe and one plum rice ball and headed for the cash register. 

I come to the cash register, but the cash register is empty. Clerk A, a young man with long black hair tied back, was busily restocking. 

I was about to say, "Excuse me," when I noticed a bell on the checkout table. In small letters, it says in both English and Japanese, "Please ring this bell if you need anything. 

First I pressed it lightly with my index finger, but no sound came out. I pressed harder with my thumb, and a lovely, high-pitched sound echoed through the store. 

I heard the voice of clerk A saying, "Please wait a moment," and he came to the cash register at a short run. 

Clerk A - Thank you for waiting. One ume rice ball and one cod roe rice ball will be 260 yen. Would you like a bag?" 

I said, "No, I don't need one. Please pay with your PASMO card." 

Clerk A: "Yes, this way please." 

He carefully pointed with his right hand where I should put my card. I held my PASMO card over the cash register and paid. 

Clerk A "Thank you very much." 

I took the two rice balls and the receipt from the clerk and put them in my bag. I looked around the store and saw that I seemed to be the only customer. Then I left the store and saw a man sitting next to the front of the store.
