"I am sick" is straightforward. It's like saying, "I'm currently experiencing illness." "I happen to be sick" adds a little something extra. It's like saying, "I'm sick right now, but this isn't my usual state." It makes it sound a bit more like the illness is a temporary thing. So, both mean you're not feeling well, but "I happen to be sick" adds a slight emphasis on the temporary nature of your illness. Does that make sense?

1. I am sick. - This is a straightforward, factual statement. It simply conveys that you are unwell without adding any extra context or emotion. - It's neutral and direct. 2. I happen to be sick. - Adding "happen to" introduces a sense of circumstance or coincidence. It implies that being sick is incidental or unexpected, often in relation to a specific situation. - For example: - "I happen to be sick today, so I can't attend the meeting." - This phrasing can sound softer or less direct compared to simply saying, "I am sick." Summary - "I am sick" is a plain declaration. - "I happen to be sick" adds subtlety, suggesting coincidence or an unexpected situation.

‘I happen to ….’ suggests that the speaker believes that the listener doesn’t know what he is about to say and will be surprised to know it. A. How do you know so much about taxes? B. I happen to be an accountant. It’s my job to know about them. (A’s question wouldn’t make sense if A knows that B is an accountant) I understand what you just said. I happen to speak Turkish. (I believe that you thought I didn’t understand you when you were speaking Turkish.)

I am sick. This is a straightforward statement. I happen to be sick. The latter is a statement you make as a side-statement. So, if you are off work and had a car accident on the way to the doctor, you can phone your employer and say, "I can't come in today as I had a car accident. I was actually on my way to the doctor because I happen to be sick as well." Hope this helps.
