「An island of everlasting summer's memory」 This is a story that happened on an island of eternal summer one winter day. I was enjoying my vacation before graduating from college. Aside from friends relaxing on the beach I left myself to the waves drifting out into the cobalt blue sea. At that time, a local young man called out to me: "Are you Japanese?" The official language of his country was not English, but I was amazed by his English fluency. He told me that he has twin sisters and that he had studied abroad in a Japanese university. It was the moment when my heart was stolen by the way he talked to me, the way he treated me as a woman ー his whole appearance was emanating how smart he was. When I got out of the sea, I noticed something serious. My flip-flops. I lost them. They were very cheap, but I couldn't get back to the hotel without them. The young man eagerly started looking for them the moment I told him about my lost. He asked me in detail about the sandals and talked to other tourists to find out if they had seen them. He finally found my sandals. However, I could only say "thank you" to him. I had a lot of words of gratitude that I wanted to convey, but my vocabulary was poor and I couldn't express my feelings abundantly. I was disappointed. That's why, I will study abroad in the future to acquire fluency in English and go to the southern island back again. これはある冬の日、常夏の島で起きた出来事である。 私は大学卒業を控えてバカンスを楽しんでいた。 ビーチでリラックスしている友達をよそに コバルトブルーの海に繰り出して一人漂う波に身を任せていた。 そんな時、ある地元の青年が声をかけてきた。 「君は日本人？」 彼の国の公用語は英語ではないが、彼の話すとても流暢な英語に驚かされた。 彼には双子の妹がいることや、日本の大学に留学したことがあることなどを 聞き、スマートな立ち振る舞いに心を奪われた。 海から出た時重大なことに気が付いた。 私のビーチサンダルがないのだ。現地で調達したとても安価なものだったが それがないとホテルまで帰れない。そのことを彼に伝えると30分ほど熱心に探してくれた。 サンダルの特徴を私に細かに尋ねたり、他の観光客にサンダルを見ていないか尋ねたりしてくれた。 そして彼はついにサンダルを見つけ出してくれた。 しかしながら、私は彼に「thank you」しか言えなかった。 本当は伝えたい感謝の言葉がたくさんあるのに、一色しか鉛筆を持っていないから自分の中の色彩に富んだ感情を表現できなかったのである。 悔しかった。だから私は将来海外へ留学して英語をマスターし、もう一度南の島へ行こうと思う。
