Over the past two decades the creation of new technologies have enabled us to communicate faster with other people. I'm still very young and therefore I find it hard to remember what it was like before social media was created. I've asked my parents what it was like to live in a world without these being able to use social media to get in touch immediatelly with other people. The first thing they told was that back then when they were young it was harder to stay in touch with the friends you made through life. For example, once my mother graduated from high school in 1976 she never heard of most of her classmates again (except for her closest friends). It wasn't until recently, 40 years after graduating, that she was able to get in touch with them through Facebook. Nowadays they have a very active Whatsapp group where thay send pictures and share stories from back when they were teens. The second thing that my parents told me is that people had to be more pacient before social media. Nowadays if you need to tell someone something, you just need to type some words and hit send. It's instant. However, in the past, you had to wait until you were at home to make a phone call or send a letter to someone, which would take much longer. My father always tells us the same story of how once our grandmother had to wait for him for 8 hours at the bus stop because he wouldn't arrive. Turns out he had taken the bus in the wrong direction and had to spend many hours trying to find his way home. Meanwhile, my grandmother had no way to know what was going on, she could just wait and hope for the best.
