The new manager laid down the new safety policy, and I had to lay down the hammer and nails, and put on the safety gloves and glasses to be allowed to carry on working. It seems that times are changing.

The/My new manager laid down a new safety policy, so I had to lay down my hammer and nails, and then put on (some) safety gloves and glasses to be allowed to carry on working. It seems that times are changing.
Excellent.

There are no mistakes! Style might be improved, but I can't suggest any such improvements because it is impossible to do so without knowing the exact nuances of what you are saying. For instance, whether you choose to say "the new safety policy" or "a new safety policy" depends upon how you are thinking about the "safety policy". Either choice could be the best. The one change I would make would be to introduce an error! I would say "It seems that the times they are a-changing". That's colloquial and wrong but it sounds good.
