English vowels can you hear all of them? English is a language rich in vowels. Many languages have 5 or 6. English has 14! This is why it is so hard to hear/comprehend and to pronounce English correctly for some non-English speakers. Let's take the example of Spanish. It has only 5 vowels, A E I O U. English has 9 more vowels that are different from the Spanish ones. So when Spanish speakers hear a word that does not contain one of Spanish five, they "hear" and "speak" the Spanish one closest to the English one. Look at the example here. "Please sit here." Now The Spanish speaker has no problem with first word The vowel in "please" is identical to the Spanish I but the second word "sit" contains a vowel that is about half way down from I. They hear "seat" not "sit" They pronounce "sit" like "seat." Now here is the secret to success. Add to your home studies passive listening. Most people concentrate on active listening and do not even know what passive listening is.That is why it is so hard for them to get good pronunciation and so hard for them to recognize words in English. English is rich in minimal pair words such as seat, sit, set, sat, soot sought etc. This causes a lot of ptoblems for beginners. Not to worry! The way to learn the language quickly is easier than you think! Learn about passive listening, which I have explained in another of my notebook entries.

Do you have any proof that passive listening works? Note that "it worked for me" is not enough. Many believe it's almost useless. I can hear and produce every single sound of the English language but it wasn't easy. I had to study the sounds one by one. The result is that no one can tell I'm from Italy, even though they can tell I'm not a native English speaker, of course. More important, I can talk very fast and be understood. But for that, I had to study reductions, assimilations, etc... Did you know that in American English the letter 't' is pronounced in at least five different ways? I had to learn all that the hard way. I don't believe in shortcuts. Also, children are children and adults are adults. We don't learn the same way.

The difficulty for me is "can't"(British pronunciation), count and cunt. They sound identical to me. In addition, "found", "fond" and "fund".
