sink vs drown I can't understand the difference between these words. They seem petty similar to one another and imply going underwater forever. Could somebody explain me the difference?

to drown means /to die because of the lack of oxygen due to water/. to sink means /to go to the bottom of the pool, lake, sea, .../ Usually /to sink/ for a living thing (exclude fishes, please) implies /to drown/. Anything that is not alive could never drown, of course, but, depending upon its weight (or density), it could very well sink. Drowning is independent of the amount of water, water (or another liquid) is just the cause of the event. Metaphorical ways of saying: I want to drown my sorrows : I want to stop something that is hurting me, using alcohol. drown the sorrows in tears, to drown my sorrow

Sink simply means that something, perhaps you, go down in something. You can sink to the bottom of a lake, and then come back up. This is not forever. Drown means that you die because you get too much liquid of some kind in your lungs. Normally, this means you sink in water, try to inhale it, and die that way. Also, if something is not alive or doesn't breathe air, it cannot drown, but it can sink. Fish and ships can both sink, but they can't drown. Drown can also mean "to be covered, enveloped, or overwhelmed by something". I could say "He is going to drown in his work." I do not mean he is going to die, but simply that he will be overwhelmed with work. Sink can mean almost the same thing, except you do it to yourself, and it is not a bad thing. "I am going to sink into my work." I mean that I will surround myself with my work and ignore other things.

Sink is the act of submerging under water. Like when an object thrown in water weighs more than the water it displaces, it sinks down. So, we can have a sinking ship, a sunk boat, a sunk box etc. Drown means suffocating under water and dying. Thus, is a person jumps in water and doesn’t know swimming, he would be sinking. If someone saves him and pulls him to the shore, he will not drown. However, if no one helps him, he will be suffocated under water and die (one word – drown). Examples: 1) The boat sank, 15 passengers drowned.
