For some examples: 1. 哪 哪边? Which side? 她在哪边? Which side is she in? 她在左边. She's in the left side. 哪里? Where? 你在哪里? Where are you? 哪个? Which one? 你要哪个? Which one do you want? 哪些? What (things)? 你要哪些书? What books do you want? 哪种? Which kind? 你要看哪种书? Which kind of book do you want to read? 2. 那 那个 that one 那个人 that person PS: 个 is just one of the measure words in Chinese. You would also say: 那本书 that book, 那条鱼 that fish, 那只猪 that pig ... (See a grammar book for details) :) 那边 over there and so on... I suggest you to learn word by word, not character by character, or learn a character from its words and expressions. Because many characters in modern Chinese language don't have a whole-word meaning, just like the "hus" doesn't make sense without its word "husband". :)

那 can be used both as a demonstrative and as as an interrogative, i.e. in a question, according to my dog-eared copy of 遠東漢英辭典 (Far East Chinese-English Dictionary). The distinction others are making between 哪 and 那 must be a mainland thing.

"that thing (is) over there"——“那东西在那。” “哪/哪儿”it mean "where" “那/那儿“it mean "there" example:"我住在斯德哥尔摩,你住哪?"—"I live in Stockholm and where do you live?"; “我住在斯德哥尔摩,你也住那啊!”——"I lived in Stockholm and you live there, too!" examination: (one person said) “你应该去那儿。”(the other one ask) “那儿是哪儿啊?” answer:(please don't read it at first...) — "You should go there." "Where is THERE?" by the way:“那”aslo as the word "that". Example: 那花真漂亮——That flower is so beautiful. (My english is terrible, I hope these English word don't have mistake...呵呵)
