Is there any difference between "hold on" and "wait a minute"? (Thank you)

In the context of asking someone to wait, they can both be used to mean the same thing. However, "wait a minute" is only for a short period of time, "hold on" is not giving a time period for waiting, so could be used to imply a longer waiting time. "Hold on" in a slightly different context can also mean "hold on to something physically or mentally, don't let it go".
