Present participles end in ing and have no is/ was etc in front. The present participle works like an adjective to describe a noun but it is formed from a verb. I can hear the water running. Running is the participle and is describing water. The present participle happens at the same time as the main verb. Perfect participles sound like the past tense, but no has/ have/ had. There are adjectives describing a noun. Past participle actions happen before the main verb. Past participles are often hidden vey well in English sentences. I found the lost money. Lost is the participle and describes money. The money was lost before it was found.

Well...present participles end in -ing, and past participles usually look like the past simple form, unless the verb is irregular (eg. been, eaten, gone, drunk, and so on). Past participles are used in perfect tenses and passive voice. Present participles are used in continuous verb forms. Both can start a participle phrase, and both can function as an adjective.

Here are some examples: Present Participle: He is running. She is dancing. We are winning. (each present participle ends with -ing) Past Participle: The window had been opened. He was raised by his grandparents. She had put the card on the table.
