Well there are lots of synonyms for the word "beyond." (see: http://thesaurus.com/browse/beyond) However, none of them would really fit in the sentence without significant changes to this. What the person is saying is that: 1. Because they told the truth they were *very* *very* embarrassed. It's just kind of slang to say we went beyond a feeling. For example, If I said I was "beyond angry." This would mean that I was not just angry, but that I was really - really angry! 2. beyond here could be changed for "not within" or "past." However, beyond would be the correct choice.

Arthur Binson As Christopher shows you, there are synonyms for the word Beyond, but it is one of those words in English that has particular use, such that many synonymous words for phrases cannot replace it. Beyond is the specific word which works in certain sentences, and it cannot easily be replaced with any synonym. .

"...are out of our control." fits best If something is beyond it is past the limit, you could use any word that denotes direction to be a synonym; farther than, above, over, after ... and so on.
