Correct answers Please, help me to choose the correct answer and to explain. 1. I thought you .....  A.   will come to the party B.   were coming to the party C.   come to the party D.   have come to the party I think the correct answer is D. But I suppose that 'would come' would be more correct 2. By the time you finish the class I ..... .  A.   will have left B.   leave C.   going to leave D.   would left I think, A. But I can't understand why.

The correct answer to Q1 is B. 'I thought you were coming to the party'. Why the past continuous? Because it's based on the use of the present continuous to indicate an intention. If you are intending to come to someone's party in the future, you would say 'I am coming to the party'. When this is reported in a sentence starting in the past tense 'I thought...', this present continuous phrase goes into the past continuous. It works like reported speech. For example: 'I am coming to the party', you said. -----> You said you were coming to the party. -----> 'I thought you were coming to the party I hope that makes sense.

In sentence number two the right answer is A and that is called the future perfect , it is used mainly to talk about two actions that will happen in the future, one of them will be completed before the other one . so here the speaker is saying that he won't be there when she finish her class so he will leave first then she will finish her class. the first action is his departure and the second one is the end of her class :)
