"I wish you would stop smoking before this Christmas: 이번 크리스마스 전에 담배를 끊었으면 좋겠어요." Could you please tell me if these words and definitions are correct? Please explain the differences between them or the usages. Please use them in an example sentence or two. Is one way used more commonly then another? I want to understand how to use them :) To smoke a cigarette 담배를 피우다 To light a cigarette 담배에 불을 붙이다 To quit smoking 담배를 끊다 Is there a sound effect for smoking or for blowing smoke? I guess in English we would just say "Puff puff".

그는 줄담배를 피웠다. 그는 담배를 하루에 한 갑씩 피운다. 바람때문에 담배에 불을 붙이기가 어려웠다. 담배를 끊으려고 여러번 시도했으나 실패했다. (=금연하려고 여러번 시도했으나 실패했다.)

First of all, u're writing is great! I just found a tiny unnatural part in those sentences. 이 담배에 좀 불을 붙여 주시겠어요?(x) -> 이 담배에 불을 좀 붙여 주시겠어요? (o) as your request, few examples 거기 소금 좀 줄래? (o) -> 거기 좀 소금 줄래? (x) 이모, 여기 밥 좀 주시겠어요? (o) -> 이모, 여기 좀 밥 주시겠어요? (x) and the sound effect in English u say 'Puff Puff', in Korea its '뻐끔뻐끔' basically it means 'opening wide and closing one's mouth' and its also used for fish '어항 속에 금붕어가 뻐끔뻐끔거린다.'

If you would like to describe the sound effect when someone puts out the fire or smoke by blowing, you can say "후" For example, 촛불을 후 불어서 껐다 Put out the candle light by blowing and puffing. If you say "I stubbed out my cigarette" in Korean, 담배를 비벼 껐다. put out the cigarette. 담배를 끄다 I think you know the expression, but in case, "No Smoking" is in Korean, "금연" or "담배금지"
