Le "Carte Prepagate", anche chiamate "Carte di Debito", sono carte “a scalare d'importo”: possono essere usate per prelevare o per spendere denaro proprio come comuni "Carte di Credito", ma qui la somma viene prelevata dalla Carta in tempo reale, fino alla totale estinzione del denaro in essa contenuto;
Dato che non viene accreditata alcuna somma di denaro, non possono essere chiamate "Carte di Credito" bensì "Carte di Debito".
Esistono 2 tipi diversi di Carte Prepagate: le Carte Prepagate Ricaricabili (quando è possibile ricaricare denaro in un secondo momento) e le Carte Prepagate Usa e Getta (che possono essere acquistate proprio come delle Carte Telefoniche contenenti una somma di denaro prestabilita e che dopo essere state utilizzate/esaurite devono essere gettate).
Le "Carte Prepagate" sono molto più facili da ottenere delle "Carte di Credito" essendo rilasciate previa semplice esibizione di un documento di identità, senza alcun bisogno di avere un conto bancario, e la maggior parte di esse può essere utilizzata in tutti i circuiti internazionali delle comuni Carte di Credito (VISA, MASTERCARD, etc.) cosicchè esse rappresentano pure una soluzione molto sicura per acquistare su internet: non può essere rubata una cifra superiore a quella contenuta nella Carta stessa.
Anche in minorenni possono possedere "Carte Prepagate", ma in tal caso un maggiorenne deve farsi carico della responsabilità.
Sfortunatamente i costi di ricarica per le "Carte Prepagate Ricaricabili" sono generalmente piuttosto alti e in caso di frode, le indagini richiederanno molto più tempo e sarà garantito un supporto molto minore.
