Managed to Hello I wonder the meaning of 'managed to' in this sentence. "He managed to climb up a tree." It means like 'trying to'? Then what is the difference? Any example of conjugation of the verb would be appreciated!

To manage is to do and succeed at something difficult. e.g. "I managed to find my socks." It was difficult to find the socks, but I did it, and succeeded. "I managed to finish the essay." It was difficult to finish the essay, but I did it. Here are some conjugations: •She's managing to lose weight (she is succeeding at this difficult task) •She managed to lose weight (she overcame this difficult task and succeeded) •she'll manage to lose weight (she will overcome this difficult task and succeed) The difference between managing and trying is that when you try to do something, it is not known if you will succeed. Here's an example: "He is managing to build the house"- he is building the house and he's succeeding, despite it being difficult. It looks as though he will get it built. "He is trying to build the house"- he is building the house, but he isn't doing it very well. It isn't known whether or not he will get it done. Hope I helped! :3

Hi Shinhye, When we say someone "managed to" (accomplish something), we mean that he or she completed a task with some effort/difficulty. When we are "trying to", we have not completed the task yet. We are currently on the task. Example: He is trying to climb a tall oak tree. After an hour, he managed to reach the top. Manage (simple present tense) Managed (simple past tense / past participle form) Managing (continuous tense) Try (simple present tense) Tried (simple past tense / past participle form) Trying (continuous tense) Hope this helps. Cheers, Lance

Hello Shinhye Lee, Maybe I can help you. ------------------------------------------ "He managed to climb up a tree." It means like 'trying to'? Then what is the difference? "Trying to" means he made an effort and did not succeed. He didn't get up the tree. "Managed to" means he made it up the tree successfully! Any example of conjugation of the verb would be appreciated! Present simple------------------------- I manage to eat rice every day. You manage to breathe air daily. He manages to live life day by day. They manage.... We manage.... Past------------ I, you, he/she/it, we, they, managed to eat rice yesterday. Future ------------ I/you/he/she/it/they/we will manage to do it tomorrow. Present continuous------------ I am managing to do that right now. (at this moment). ------------------------------------------------ This is just some help, and I will allow you to look up the entire conjugation when you can. Best to use it when you can as well! Good question! Keep on learning English! Regards, David

It means "succeeded in" or "accomplished to" or "could". It is usually used when you achieve something important and hard. I managed to pass all my exams. He manages to fix his car.
