Greetings, Halt - temporary stop Stop- Stopping somewhere when one gets one's destination Halt is a synonym of stop. As verbs the difference between halt and stop is that halt is to stop marching or halt can be to limp while stop is to cease moving. As nouns the difference between halt and stop is that halt is a cessation, either temporary or permanent or halt can be (dated) lameness; a limp while stop is a (usually marked) place where line buses, trams or trains halt to let passengers get on and off or stop can be a small well-bucket; a milk-pail. As a adjective halt is (archaic) lame, limping. As a adverb stop is prone to halting or hesitation. Hope it would help ! Regards, Deepika Mantra

They can mean the same thing. However, the main difference is more the situation. Police would say halt, it is more of an order. Anyone can say stop.
