What is the different between идти and ходить? Why is идти на пляж wrong? Why is ходить на пляж correct?

Hi Taylor! As there are lots of explanations already, I guess you've understood the difference between these two words. It's absolutely right, идти is a one direction verb and ходить means a multi-directional movement. Unfortunately, it's only the top of an iceberg. Almost all verbs in Russian form "one direction - multi-direction" pairs. It's about perfective and imperfective aspects. Hello Taylor, There's nothing wrong with "идти на пляж" and "ходить на пляж" per se, but both can be wrong in some contexts. It's a bit hard to explain the difference between them here in the answers section: verbs of motion are considered to be one of the most complicated grammar points in Russian (some verbs refer to going in one direction; some — to multi-directional movements; there's also a difference between occasional and habitual movements). But actually there are a few other verbs that share the same difference, so maybe try reading this first — http://www.russianlessons.net/grammar/verbs_motion.php (Going Places in Russian) and http://masterrussian.com/verbs/verbs_of_motion.htm Hopefully at least one of these explanations will help a little.

Идти - это чаще когда целенаправленно движешься. Ходить - это возможность физическая в принципе. Идти на пляж - так говорят :-) также как и говорят ,,ходить на пляж ,,.

Very simply put it, xодить is more like a habit (I usually go to the beach, go to the cinema etc.) while идти is a one-time action. Я иду на плаж. - I'm going to the beach (right now, for example) Я хожу на плаж - I usually (like to) go to the beach. and yes, all Russian verbs have two forms, one denoting a habitual action and the other a one-time action.

When you describe motion in Russain, you need to know two verbs. In Russain, there are two groups of verbs of motion. One, a unidirectional verb of motion, describes motion in one direction and the other, a multidirectional verb of motion, describes motion in more that one direction. ИДТИ ( unidirectional motion-----> ) -1) moving in one direction, being on your way with a final destination point in mind, being headed someplace.------ Я иду на пляж.= I am going to the beach. ( I am on my way to the beach) 2) Expressing a settled plan for the future. - сегодня вечером я иду на пляж. ХОДИТЬ ( multidirectional motion /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/)- 1)moving to your destination and back. Я вчера ходил на пляж.= I went to the beach yesterday ( I visited that place and now I am back) 2) moving in multiple directions without a certain destination in mind, general motion with no specific goals Я хожу по пляжу и ищу хорошее место- I walk around the beach and look for a good place. 3) ability to walk - Наш ребёнок маленький. он ещё не ходит. = Our child is small. He can't walk This concept is important to understand, as the same kind of distinction is made for all the verbs of motion
