Get to bed on time (Meaning) I would like to know the meaning of the expression 'to GET TO BED on time'. I wonder if it means 'to GO TO BED on time'. Is it correct to interpret the verb 'get' as 'go'? Also, I wonder if 'get to bed' always have to be followed by a time expression such as 'on time'. If 'get to bed' and 'go to bed' mean the same, when should I use 'get to bed'? CONTEXT: Mark and Daniela’s kids love the weekends. They don’t have to go to school and they get to play with their friends and watch a bit of TV. They are not allowed to watch TV during the week because they have to do their homework and GET TO BED on time. But on weekends, they get to watch some of their favorite TV shows which were recorded during the week and they get to sleep late.

So for me, in this context given, they are very close and interchangeable. The slight nuance might be that "go" is a journey and "get" is the end result. But this is really a thin difference. I use "go to bed" more than "get". But look at this..."last night i went out and stayed out late. I didn't get to bed until 5am". Here, "get" adds the tiny bit of drama and emphasises the end result. But "go" would have been fine too. In other examples..."After finishing work I go home. I usually get home around 7pm". In terms of need a time expression - I would say, no, not at all. "After finishing work I go home. I usually get home really tired". Again, this is explaining the end state.

Hi Jordi! You’re right: “get to bed” and “go to bed” are pretty much the same in this context. I would say “go to bed” emphasises the process a bit more, and “get to bed” the result. It doesn’t have to be used with “on time”. I could tell my kids “Get to bed!”, or say “I’m tired, I have to get to bed.” They are not always interchangeable, though: “get to bed” is informal, and sounds slightly strange to me in a past or future tense - I would prefer “go to bed” here (e.g. “I got to bed too late last night/ the kids will have to get to bed early tomorrow”). Hope this helps!

I think this get to is the same as the "get to watch TV", so it means they are allowed to sleep late.
