Is 'kawaisou' derogatory?

not excactry. KAWAISOU is feeling. use from you to someone or maybe yourself Mostly use when you feel sorry (pity) for someone I feel sorry for her/him = kwaisou na hito or kawaisouni but when you are angry, you can use same sentence with irony(I feel sorry for her) this one means more like derogatory but not exactry the same.

Mostly, no. However, depending on the situation, it could be humiliating to describe someone "kawaisou". Suppose there is a person with some handicap who lives happily just like other people, without any problem except for a little bit of inconvenience. I'd not say "kawaisou" referring him/her.
