"to drop something like a hot potato" To get away from (disassociate yourself from) quickly because being with that or having that will cause you harm. Obviously, if a potato is hot you can't hold it in your hands and you drop it quickly. You want nothing to do with it. "When he saw how she acted around other men at the club, he dropped her like a hot potato and starting dating someone else." "When the market started to go down, I dropped that stock like a hot potato." (I didn't invest in that stock anymore because I knew I would lose money.) "When the team had the opportunity to get rid of Player X, they dropped him like a hot potato because he was such a lousy player."

This sentence means he stopped talking about that topic very quickly. That phrase references a game called "hot potato" that kids sometimes play - they stand in a circle and pass around a potato (or other round object) as quickly as they can. That's probably why they used "hot potato" and not some other vegetable. Hope that helps!
