Hi Nanako! It's a very difficult distinction between the two set of words. Firstly Aside literally means: - to put something out of the way. So Aside from basically means the same as Apart from. Aside from Nina, everyone got on the bus. Everyone got on the bus, apart from Nina. With Aside and Apart from - I would say aside is less formal whilst apart from is very formal and proper. Besides is a weird word. So on the one hand it can mean be used informal as an explanation of "whatever." Person A: Fine, I'll go out to the movies with you. Person B: Yes! Besides whats the worst that could happen? Besides can also be say the same as Aside - so everyone was on the bus besides Nina. Except is used frequently to single one thing out! I would say that except is used the most frequently of the four phrases - it's more conversational. I bought everything from the supermarket except toilet roll. Hope this helps - if you have any more questions please let me know :) Have a great day! Brad

You can configure these words in different ways. Some example sentences are: Everyone was happy, aside from Rachel. Everyone besides Rachel was happy. Apart from Rachel, everyone was happy. Everyone except for Rachel was happy. They have a similar meaning when used this way.
